We are saddened by the violence that took place yesterday afternoon on a school campus in East Oakland, in our own community and backyard. Our thoughts are with the individuals who were injured, the school community, as well as the students, staff, and families across the city and country who are forced to question whether their local classrooms are a safe place due to the continual threat of gun violence. We remain committed to creating and supporting opportunities so all students – no matter their identity or zip code – can pursue a rigorous, inspiring, and engaging educational experience without fear. Equitable education is not only about teaching and curriculum, it also means protecting students and teachers from violence and trauma in their schools. The Kapor Center will continue to support initiatives and organizations working to create equitable, safe, and just schools and communities.
