The People’s Hackathon: Building Community Tech Solutions for Oakland

June 17, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

What if there was a community based approach for Oakland residents to share vetted resources, report issues, and support each other while feeling more heard and understood by their council members? We have partnered with Councilmember Carroll Fife to bring forward a summer hackathon to address some of the challenges faced by her constituents and the city as a whole.

Currently, the City of Oakland provides Oak311 as a mechanism to request city services to report illegal dumping, graffiti, potholes, encampments, building maintenance, and urgent infrastructure issues. However, residents at times are not sure if/when their reporting will be resolved and even if it’s been processed. Some residents and businesses would also like to identify what they’ve contributed to addressing these challenges and have 2 way communication with the city and their neighbors. There’s a missed opportunity in helping identify and uplift community approaches and resources in user-friendly approaches. There’s also a need to raise awareness of possible solutions at the intersections of civic engagement, technology, and community that is more user friendly, culturally relevant, and accessible to all residents.

We are looking for a community-based solution that can help address the opportunity while leveraging technology.
