As summer gets underway, we are getting closer to taking the next steps with our future home at 2148 Broadway. Located in Uptown, the building will house the Kapor Center as well as several like-minded non-profits and businesses.
If you’ve walked by in the last several months, you may have noticed work going on already. We have been doing interior demolition in preparation for the major work scheduled to begin September 1st. We expect to move in to the new space in September 2015.
As you may have heard, we had considered taking advantage of the New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) Program as part of the project financing. However, in the end, we concluded we had the ability to finance the building without the additional resource provided by the program. We came to believe that this valuable public subsidy should go to projects which otherwise could not be undertaken.
We are excited that our new building is moving forward and can’t wait to see this dream become a reality. Our hope is that the Kapor Center will be a vibrant destination for impact-driven, civic-oriented conversations and action, contributing to the inclusive growth of Oakland’s burgeoning tech sector.
Meanwhile, as we wait for the major construction to begin, check out photos of the amazing mural created by the Illuminaries for the building’s exterior wall as part of Oakland First Fridays. This is the latest mural installment; past murals have been created by Bay Area artists, Favianna Rodriguez, Jed Sullivan, and Jessica Sabogal.
