To be honest\, it feels like we are living in both the best of times and the worst of times. So this year’s theme may at first glance appear to be a contradiction: Save the Internet | The Internet Saves. \nWhether you want to be part of the community fighting to “Save the Internet” or be part of the community who believe “The Internet Saves”\, the people\, the organizations\, the issues\, the questions\, and the potential solutions will all be gathered on June 5 and 6 in New York. Read our blog post announcing the theme to learn more. \n\n\n\nWhat Is PDF?\n\n\n\nPersonal Democracy Forum is the definitive event in the world of technology and politics. PDF brings together a thousand top opinion makers\, political practitioners\, technologists\, and journalists from across the ideological spectrum for two days to network\, exchange ideas\, and explore how technology and wired citizens are changing politics\, governance\, and civil society. SUMMARY:PARISOMA [X]
DESCRIPTION:Who are you missing in your recruitment?: Diverse talent is out there you just have to know where to look\n\nWe often hear that diversity is a problem in tech and that big companies should do better at hiring people from different backgrounds and we all rally and say ‘Yes\, Google and Apple and Facebook should do better at that’. But what about the little guy? They need more talent and want to reach a large customer base too\, right? So why not improve hiring in a way that reflects the changing demographics—42% of the US will be Black and Latino/a by 2040?\n\nWell\, that’s just too hard to think about as a startup\, right? As a startup founder just scrapping by\, looking for your next funder\, the last thing you want on your plate is the daunting task of hiring software engineers.\n\nSo your options are:\n\n1. Do the work yourself and worry about hiring until after ‘this one big project is done’.\n2. Send an email (or Facebook) blast to your friends and you hire one of them.\n3. Post your job description on a listserv and cross your fingers.\n4. Attend this class and find out what hides behind door number 4.\n\nIn this class we will explore what steps you can take to hit two bottom lines: 1. hiring talented coders and 2. creating a team filled with people from a variety of backgrounds.\n\nThis class blow your mind with a new perspective on how small businesses can—with just as much effort as #1\, #2 and #3 above—increase diversity on their team now and not wait until they become the ‘Google\, Apple\, & Facebook’s of the world.\n

SUMMARY:The O'Reilly Fluent Conference
DESCRIPTION:The O’Reilly Fluent Conference was first launched in 2012 as a new event for developers working with JavaScript\, HTML5\, and other web technologies. Now in its third year\, Fluent covers the full scope of the Web Platform and its associated technologies\, including WebGL\, CSS3\, mobile APIs\, Node.js\, AngularJS\, ECMAScript 6\, and more. \nThese technologies have become central to all kinds of development\, not just building websites. If you’re building web applications\, designing for mobile devices\, or working with the web’s evolving infrastructure\, you need to keep up with the proliferation of new technology that’s driving the Web Platform. \nAt Fluent\, you’ll immerse yourself in learning. Fluent’s speakers are people who are actually working with the same technologies you use—and inventing clever ways to wring the most out of them as they create products and services. Fluent offers a variety of forums for learning\, from workshops and sessions with experts to the “hallway track” between sessions where attendees informally connect and share questions\, knowledge\, and perspectives with their peers. \nIf your business depends on JavaScript\, HTML5\, or other crucial web technologies—or the people who work with them—then you won’t want to miss Fluent.

SUMMARY:Latin@ Technology conference to precede SXSW 2014
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCING THE FIRST EVER LATIN@ TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE TO PRECEDE SXSW \nThe Kapor Center for Social Impact\, along with Kety Esquivel\, Principal of Esquivel McCarson Consulting and Ana Flores\, Principal of Latina Bloggers Connect announce the start of planning for the first ever Latino Technology Conference to precede SXSW. \n“We decided to hold this pre-SXSW Latino Technology Conference in 2014 to try and ensure greater involvement by the Latino community in SXSW\,” said Ana Flores. “Although we have made great progress\, despite the growth in numbers of Latinos in technology\, the participation of Latinos as attendees\, speakers and panelist in important conferences like SXSW is minimal. We are hoping that this pre-conference will help to move that number in the right direction.” \n“I am passionate about ensuring that Latinos are represented in these venues\,” said Kety Esquivel. “Moreover\, despite the fact that by 2050 Hispanics will be 1/3 of the U.S. population\, the divide between the investments and commitments being made in digital to reach the Latino audience are significant. We need to challenge investors\, organizations\, media creators\, agencies\, conference organizers and startups to make this commitment. What better place to talk about this then at a pre-SXSW conference?” \n“After attending last year\, the Kapor Center decided to contribute to those efforts which would maximize the opportunity for Latinos to both benefit from and contribute to the SXSW experience\,” said Nicole Sanchez Managing Partner of the Kapor Center for Social Impact. “We believe a one day pre-conference for Latinos in tech will be an important catalyst and milestone towards achieving these goals.” \nThe inaugural Latino Technology Conference will occur immediately before SXSW and will be a day long event. Proposals for panels will be accepted before the conference and event organizers are reaching out to corporate and other foundation sponsors to try and ensure that the event is accessible to the Latino community. \nQuestions? Contact Kety Esquivel: kety.esquivel at gmail.com \nTo apply to be a participant in this conference\, complete the short application by Friday\, January 24th: http://www.kaporcenter.org/latinosintech/

SUMMARY:"Documented" Film Screening and Interview with Jose Antonio Vargas
DESCRIPTION:In 2011\, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in an essay published in the New York Times Magazine. Documented chronicles his journey to America from the Philippines as a child; his journey through America as an immigration reform activist; and his journey inward as he re-connects with his mother\, whom he hasn’t seen in person in over 20 years. \n\nPlease join the Kapor Center as we present this film for the first time ever in Oakland and welcome Jose Antonio Vargas as our special guest for a Q & A session after the screening.\n\nThe challenges for undocumented members of our community have long been of concern to the Kapor Center and our sibling organization\, Level Playing Field Institute.  As our collective aim is to diversify the fields of science and technology\, we are acutely aware of the talent that has been squandered due to arcane laws and a mind-boggling system to citizenship. \nPlease join us on January 28 as we explore this issue in our own community and beyond. \nDoors open at 7 pm\, screening starts at 7:30 pm.
