SUMMARY:Startup Weekend Education Oakland - Schools and Tools
DESCRIPTION:What should the future of school look like in Oakland? \nCome with your idea for a school\, tech tool\, after school program\, learning space or redesign concept for part of an existing school. Over the weekend\, you’ll form a team and build a prototype to bring your idea to life and test it out. \nThis event is open to all\, but designed for the Oakland community to design the future of school in Oakland. All are welcome: parents\, students\, educators\, administrators\, business professionals\, designers\, technical professionals\, non-profit\, policy makers\, and community members. \nWhat happens at Startup Weekend?\nFriday – pitch ideas\, form teams\nSaturday – talk to people about your idea\, sign up for coaching\, build a prototype\nSunday – finish your prototype\, pitch your progress to the community and a panel of judges \nCan students participate?\nYes! We’re aiming for students to lead 50% of teams. Startup Weekend is best for high school students\, but middle school students may participate as well. Email oaklandedu@startupweekend.org. \nDo I need to pitch an idea to participate?\nNo. You can join someone else’s team that you’re inspired by. \nCan I work on an existing project?\nIf you’ve already built or prototyped something\, your project will not be eligible to participate. This is to be fair to other groups who are starting from scratch over the weekend. However\, you are encouraged to spend lots of time researching and thinking about your idea before you arrive. Also\, existing schools are invited to come and reimagine an aspect of their school (i.e.\, new schedule\, new staffing roles\, classroom routines and practices\, etc). \nWill translation or child care be available?\nYes. Please indicate that you would like translation or child care when you register so we can adequately prepare. \n  \nSign up here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/startup-weekend-education-oakland-schools-and-tools-tickets-29060726415

SUMMARY:Kapor Capital People Ops Tech Forum 2016
DESCRIPTION:Kapor Capital People Ops Tech Competition\nTwo years following the push for the high tech industry to release their employee demographics\, the numbers remain grossly stagnant. In 2016 only 2% of Google’s employees were African American\, and 3% were Hispanic/Latinx. The stats are nearly identical for Facebook. \nTech giants have blamed the lack of a pipeline as the problem\, but it’s much deeper and more multifaceted than that. According to USA Today\, “top universities turn out black and latinx computer science and engineering graduates at twice the rate the leading technology companies hire them.” These students are overlooked in the hiring process\, lack the advanced coding expertise to land the roles or opt-out from pursuing technical careers all together. What’s more\, women and people of color that are hired are leaving the industry in droves due to inhospitable cultures inside of these firms. \nPattern matching and other biases have allowed these trends to persist for decades\, making the HR/People Ops sector ripe for disruption. People Operations Technology (POT) is helping to change this narrative from decisions based on human hunches to a data-driven science leveraging technology. \n“Given the changing demographics of the U.S.\, given the renewed attention to diversity and inclusion\, we think this will raise the floor for what companies have to be doing\,” says Freada Kapor Klein\, partner at Kapor Capital and founder of the Level Playing Field Institute. Instead of throwing up our hands and saying “it’s just a pipeline problem that the schools need to fix” or “there is no pipeline problem\, it’s a tech culture problem”\, it is time to look for rigorous solutions at scale. \nOn December 7\, 2016\, Kapor Capital\, will host the second annual “People Ops Tech Competition” in Oakland\, CA\, which aims to continue to grow the sector of people ops tech solutions to mitigate bias at scale. The competition will bring together leading entrepreneurs and investors with diversity and inclusion experts\, all striving to help tech and other sectors remove biases from their People Ops practices.

SUMMARY:Startup Weekend Oakland - Latinx Tech Edition
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nDescription\n\n\n\nThe complex intersectionalities of the Latinx (La-teen-ex) population in the U.S. coupled with their increasing technology consumption make this ethnic group one of the most misunderstood\, yet powerful communities of our time. By 2060\, over a quarter of the entire U.S. population will be Latinx – that’s about 119MM people – representing over a trillion dollars of economic power. \nAs of 2013\, Latinx Millennials and Gen-Z comprised 58% of the Latinx population. These groups are proving to be a game-changing consumer segment across markets because of the way they are influencing their communities across race\, culture\, politics\, gender identity and language — case in point\, the term Latinx. \nImagine what could happen if we gathered 100 entrepreneurially-minded Latinxs and allies over 54 hours to identify and design technology solutions to problems disproportionately facing the U.S. Latinx community? What if we facilitated mentorship by some of the most talented technologists\, business innovators\, and prominent investors? \nAnd\, what if this social experiment was hosted in Oakland\, one of the most diverse\, activist\, and innovative communities in the nation? \nThis is why we are re-launching Startup Weekend Oakland and organizing the first ever Latinx in Tech Edition. Are you up for the challenge? We are and we look forward to having you join us October 21-23 as the East Bay and San Francisco Bay Area tech ecosystems come together. \nNeed based scholarships available – Please use SW15 for $15 ticket for all 3 days! We are subsidizing the cost for a limited time – Register by 10/9!   Questions – email us at oaklandlatinx@startupweekend.org \nStay tuned for special guests to be announced! This Startup Weekend Oakland edition is sponsored by Kapor Capital and Kapor Center for Social Impact. For all event details\, please visit Startup Weekend Oakland Event page here

SUMMARY:2016 Oakland Summit on Blacks in Tech
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION\nWe’re in the midst of another year of powerful Black activism during this\, the 50th Anniversary of the Black Panther Party. The second annual Oakland Summit on Blacks in Tech will focus on how Black employees of tech companies can best harness individual and collective power to make beneficial change. Join us for three strategy- and tactic-filled sessions. Get your life and help others get theirs. \nAGENDA \n8:30am Breakfast\n9:00am Welcome and Opening Remarks \nSPECIAL PRESENTATION in celebration of the Black Panther Party’s 50th Anniversary! \n9:30am Session I: Getting Organized on the Homefront\nSuccessful movements build internal capacity before effecting external change. Internal capacity development for Blacks folks in tech follows three progressions: 1) fortifying your financial foundation to permit greater agency\, 2) exploring individual tactics for activism within your company\, and 3) creating social justice organizations within your company. This session will share insights on all three.\nPresenters: Anthony Heckman (Kapor Capital*). Moderated by Darrell Jones III (Clef*). \n10:30am Session II: Sustaining a Movement Needs More than ReTweeting \nOn a daily basis\, organizers are working online and in person to push for positive change in and for black communities. Learn more about a sample of these efforts and how you can bring your considerable talents to advance causes locally and nationally.\nPresenters: Brandi Collins (Color Of Change.org)\, Donna Bransford (Black Organizing Project)\, Tiffani Ashley Bell (The Human Utility). Moderated by Cedric Brown (Kapor Center). \n11:30am Session III: Caring for Ourselves so We Can Care for Others \nRecently\, prominent sports figures such as Colin Kaepernick have started to leverage their public positions to advocate for social justice. In tech\, African Americans are looking to do the same\, advocating for more diversity in the industry and supporting causes such as Black Lives Matter. Whether it’s extra time in the office or strained relationships with co-workers\, such work comes at a cost.  As such\, self-care is important. We must take care of ourselves so that we can take care of others. After this session\, you will be able to examine your current habits and determine ways to change your lifestyle to develop a better work-life fit.\nPresenters: Elen Awalom (Ola Initiative*)\, Vanessa Mason. Moderated by Y-Vonne Hutchinson (ReadySet). \n*Affiliations listed for reference only. \n12:30pm Snacks & Closing Remarks\n1:00pm Adjourn & Networking \n  \nFor more information: Click Here

Well\, the human resources software (or people operations) space is now a $15 billion industry\, growing 60% in the last 5 years\, with $2.4B in investments flowing into the sector in 2015\, and with at least two unicorns (Gusto and Zenefits).  Per CB insights\, major investors in the people ops space include Kapor Capital\, 500 Startups\, Google Ventures\, Andreessen Horowitz\, and more!\n\nWe invite you to explore what’s possible and meet your potential next investor! We’re looking for passionate designers\, developers\, community members\, and business/non-profit professionals who want to make a difference and improve diversity in tech companies. Each team must have at least three people.\nLeading researchers will present recent findings on the leaky pipeline and unconscious bias.\nWhat follows is a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation\, coding\, designing\, and market validation.\nThe event culminates with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders which presents another opportunity for critical feedback.\nWhether entrepreneurs found companies\, find a co-founder\, meet someone new\, or simply learn a new skill that stretches them beyond their usual 9-to-5\, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups.\n\n\n\nAbout Startup Weekend: Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active community leaders and entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in hundreds of cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to Canada to Brazil\, people around the globe come together for 54 hour workshops to pitch ideas\, form teams\, and start companies to change their lives as well as those around them. \nAbout the Research: The Leaky Tech Pipeline framework illuminates how bias and barriers affect each step along the pathway to becoming a software engineer\, tech employee\, or tech founder. Barriers and biases affect the outcomes at each stage\, and result in the cumulative disparities seen in the tech industry. The framework takes into account education\, demographic\, and industry data and incorporates social science research on bias\, inequity\, and disparities. The pipeline itself consists of multiple broad stages (e.g.\, K-12 education\, college\, career entry\, career advancement) and describes disparities in tech as a complex and systemic problem.\n\nRefund Policy:  No refunds will be granted within 7 days of the event if food and drink have already been ordered. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. \nTerms of Participation Agreement: It is our job to provide you with an incredible networking and learning opportunity. Our intention is that you meet some amazing people that you might actually start a company with\, build relationships with coaches\, and learn from your peers. The event is intended to be a collaborative forum for sharing\, learning\, building\, and having fun. As such\, by registering as a participant\, you acknowledge that any ideas shared by you or anyone else over the course of the event are contributions to the overall experience and community. If you as a participant are worried about someone stealing your ideas\, please reconsider your participation in the event itself or simply refrain from sharing specifics about your idea. \nAs a member of your startup community\, you agree to to be inclusive of any and all people and their ideas. You agree to act professionally\, treat everyone with respect\, and treat the event facilities with proper care. You agree that you are responsible for any accidents or damages that you cause. SUMMARY:Richmond Community Foundation 6th Annual Northern California Summit on Children and Youth
DESCRIPTION:The Richmond Community Foundation and the members of the 2015 Summit Steering Committee are pleased to bring the 6th Annual Northern California Summit on Children and Youth to the Richmond Civic Center again this year. The summit is scheduled for April 30\, 2015 and the theme for this year’s event is Bridging the STEM Diversity Gap – Building the Next Generation Workforce. \nLack of diversity in the Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Math (STEM) fields received national attention when the largest technology companies in the country released their diversity numbers.  Across the board\, African Americans and Latinos made up barely 2% of the workforce.  And although women make up more than 50% of college graduates\, they represent less than 30% of those working in STEM fields.  We need to ensure that careers in STEM fields are available to all Californians and build pathways that provide opportunities for young women and young men of color. \nThe day will be comprised of dynamic speakers and presentations that explore academic\, vocational\, training\, mentoring and employment programs targeting underserved youth and focusing on STEM\, and also evaluate career opportunities for women as well as boys and men of color.  The goal is to demonstrate successful STEM pathways and encourage more organizations to replicate or scale them up for West Contra County stakeholders. \nThis convening will attract educators\, community organizations\, community leaders\, local government and elected officials\, businesses\, and area foundations from throughout Northern California to share innovative approaches\, research-driven models\, and best practices for supporting children and youth.

SUMMARY:SXSW Interactive - Beyond the Diversity Data: Strategies that Work
DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, the world’s leading tech companies released their workforce employment data for the first time\, revealing just how vastly underrepresented people of color and women are in the sector. Nevertheless\, the release of this data offered an important starting point to develop and carry out strategies to diversify the tech and entrepreneurship pipeline. This panel explores current and emergent efforts and thinking behind ways to create a tech sector that is led by and works for all. \nMarch 15th 3:30pm – 4:30pm Austin Convention Center Ballroom E

SUMMARY:SXSW Interactive - How Not to Hire and Retain Employees of Colors
DESCRIPTION:It’s time for some real talk in ethnic diversity. Members of this panel will discuss awkward moments and racial microaggressions. 2014 saw the release of diversity numbers from tech companies big and small and the shared theme was that there’s a lot of work to be done to equalize the workforce. At the time the numbers were released\, Google\, Twitter\, Facebook\, LinkedIn\, Pinterest\, and Yahoo are all under 5% Latino and under 2% Black. \nIn this discussion\, Engineers and VCs from several prominent tech companies will discuss the unsuccessful approaches that have been taken and common pitfalls. They will delve into what’s being done to create more inclusive and diverse companies through reaching people earlier in the pipeline and investing in retention. Let’s push for companies that look like our nation. #moreofus
