SUMMARY:The People's Hackathon: Building Community Tech Solutions for Oakland
DESCRIPTION:What if there was a community based approach for Oakland residents to share vetted resources\, report issues\, and support each other while feeling more heard and understood by their council members? We have partnered with Councilmember Carroll Fife to bring forward a summer hackathon to address some of the challenges faced by her constituents and the city as a whole. \nCurrently\, the City of Oakland provides Oak311 as a mechanism to request city services to report illegal dumping\, graffiti\, potholes\, encampments\, building maintenance\, and urgent infrastructure issues. However\, residents at times are not sure if/when their reporting will be resolved and even if it’s been processed. Some residents and businesses would also like to identify what they’ve contributed to addressing these challenges and have 2 way communication with the city and their neighbors. There’s a missed opportunity in helping identify and uplift community approaches and resources in user-friendly approaches. There’s also a need to raise awareness of possible solutions at the intersections of civic engagement\, technology\, and community that is more user friendly\, culturally relevant\, and accessible to all residents. \nWe are looking for a community-based solution that can help address the opportunity while leveraging technology. \n10:00 am: Welcome Remarks\n11:00 am Team Formation & Design Sprint\n12:30 pm: Lunch\n1:30 pm: Design Sprints\n4:00pm: Food / Drinks\n5:00pm: Presentation & Closing

SUMMARY:How to Talk to Your Boss About Race Book Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:Racism is the default in our society and nowhere is the issue of race more embedded than in the workplace. Fighting racism at work means pushing the workplace to become something that it has never been before—truly equitable. As we contend with the Great Resignation and the impact of Covid\, particularly among those most marginalized\, it’s become more critical than ever to talk about race in the workplace. \nY-Vonne Hutchinson is the CEO and founder of ReadySet\, a diversity and inclusion training firm that helps tech giants\, political leaders\, media outlets\, and Fortune 500 companies speak more productively about racism and turn talk into action. Hutchinson founded ReadySet in large part due to her own experiences with racism in the workforce as a Black woman. To date\, ReadySet has worked with hundreds of companies across the country to build\, manage\, and grow diverse teams. A graduate of Harvard Law\, Hutchinson worked as an international labor and human rights lawyer for nearly a decade before founding ReadySet.

SUMMARY:Tech Intersections
DESCRIPTION:Kickoff the year 2020 with Tech Intersections: Celebrating Womxn of Color in Technology\, taking place at Mills College in Oakland\, California\, for its third year on Saturday\, January 25\, 2020 \nOur conference features ALL womxn of color in tech speakers for an all womxn of color audience.\nA sampling of our ~40 speakers includes: \nTiffani Ashley Bell\, Executive Director\, The Human Utility\nIrma Olguin\, Jr.\, CEO and Co-founder\, Bitwise Industries\nSusana Benavidez\, Student\, Stanford University\nAubrey Blanche\, Global Head of Diversity & Belonging\, Atlassian\nIdalin Bobé\, Founder of TechActivist.Org\nJoy Dixon\, Senior Manager\, Engineering\, at Salesforce\nNancy Douyon\, Design Ethicist & Product Philosopher\, Douyon Signature\nMarlen Andrea Salazar\, Web Developer / Co-owner\, Design Action Collective\nChristianna Taylor\, CTO\, Gantri\nRae Wright\, Donor Support Manager\, ActBlue \nView all speakers and sessions. \nWhy Is This Space Important? \nWe created Tech Intersections to address the needs of womxn of color\, such as African-Americans and Latinx\, who rarely see others like themselves in the workplace\, especially in higher-ranking positions. Existing tech conferences — even ones specifically designed for women — often have few underrepresented womxn in attendance and as speakers\, particularly on technical topics. Additionally\, tech conferences are generally unaffordable\, creating a financial barrier to those interested in breaking into the industry. Tech Intersections addresses these concerns by having inexpensive tickets\, providing free childcare\, being located where womxn of color are\, and limiting attendance to our target audience. We also hold a concurrent Ally Skills workshop for supporters outside our target demographic who want to learn how to support womxn of color. \nSneak Peek of What To Expect: \nOur workshops will include topics like: \nUse your story to get your next opportunity\nGet Your App in the App Store/Google Chrome Sooner with Ionic\nRe-Engineering your Career into Technical Product Management\nHacking Entrepreneurship: Trademarking and Business Protection for Creatives\nFree childcare will be provided. \nWe Hope You Can Join Us! \n————————————————————————– \nTech Intersections is primarily focused on womxn of color most underrepresented in tech. While we value our allies and recognize that all womxn in tech and mxn of color also face discrimination\, this is a unique opportunity for those most underrepresented womxn to have their own space. We hope our allies will join us at a concurrent allies workshop.
