DESCRIPTION:Join SPUR and the Kapor Center this spring for a three-part series about how tech can be done right. The employment landscape of the future could look far different than what we’re familiar with today. What will it take to build an equitable blue-collar tech workforce? In part two of the conversation\, we’ll talk with public and private Oakland-based organizations that are experiencing and planning for this changing work environment. Co-presented by the Kapor Center.\n\n+ Julina Bonilla / Port of Oakland\n+ Gia Ilole / BART\n+ Mark Hansen / Prologis

SUMMARY:Latin@ Technology conference to precede SXSW 2014
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCING THE FIRST EVER LATIN@ TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE TO PRECEDE SXSW \nThe Kapor Center for Social Impact\, along with Kety Esquivel\, Principal of Esquivel McCarson Consulting and Ana Flores\, Principal of Latina Bloggers Connect announce the start of planning for the first ever Latino Technology Conference to precede SXSW. \n“We decided to hold this pre-SXSW Latino Technology Conference in 2014 to try and ensure greater involvement by the Latino community in SXSW\,” said Ana Flores. “Although we have made great progress\, despite the growth in numbers of Latinos in technology\, the participation of Latinos as attendees\, speakers and panelist in important conferences like SXSW is minimal. We are hoping that this pre-conference will help to move that number in the right direction.” \n“I am passionate about ensuring that Latinos are represented in these venues\,” said Kety Esquivel. “Moreover\, despite the fact that by 2050 Hispanics will be 1/3 of the U.S. population\, the divide between the investments and commitments being made in digital to reach the Latino audience are significant. We need to challenge investors\, organizations\, media creators\, agencies\, conference organizers and startups to make this commitment. What better place to talk about this then at a pre-SXSW conference?” \n“After attending last year\, the Kapor Center decided to contribute to those efforts which would maximize the opportunity for Latinos to both benefit from and contribute to the SXSW experience\,” said Nicole Sanchez Managing Partner of the Kapor Center for Social Impact. “We believe a one day pre-conference for Latinos in tech will be an important catalyst and milestone towards achieving these goals.” \nThe inaugural Latino Technology Conference will occur immediately before SXSW and will be a day long event. Proposals for panels will be accepted before the conference and event organizers are reaching out to corporate and other foundation sponsors to try and ensure that the event is accessible to the Latino community. \nQuestions? Contact Kety Esquivel: kety.esquivel at gmail.com \nTo apply to be a participant in this conference\, complete the short application by Friday\, January 24th: http://www.kaporcenter.org/latinosintech/

SUMMARY:"Documented" Film Screening and Interview with Jose Antonio Vargas
DESCRIPTION:In 2011\, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in an essay published in the New York Times Magazine. Documented chronicles his journey to America from the Philippines as a child; his journey through America as an immigration reform activist; and his journey inward as he re-connects with his mother\, whom he hasn’t seen in person in over 20 years. \n\nPlease join the Kapor Center as we present this film for the first time ever in Oakland and welcome Jose Antonio Vargas as our special guest for a Q & A session after the screening.\n\nThe challenges for undocumented members of our community have long been of concern to the Kapor Center and our sibling organization\, Level Playing Field Institute.  As our collective aim is to diversify the fields of science and technology\, we are acutely aware of the talent that has been squandered due to arcane laws and a mind-boggling system to citizenship. \nPlease join us on January 28 as we explore this issue in our own community and beyond. \nDoors open at 7 pm\, screening starts at 7:30 pm.
