Tapia Conference: Women of Color in Computing: Addressing the Double-Bind Through A Researcher-Practitioner Collaborative

A large body of research has examined the structural and social-psychological barriers to the participation of women or people of color in STEM and computing across PreK-12 education, post-secondary education, the tech workforce, and entrepreneurship and venture capital. Much of this research, however, has focused on either women or people of color, to the exclusion of the examination of the intersection of race and gender, and other marginalized sexual, cultural, economic, and linguistic identities. This panel will bring together a group of professionals leading a new initiative to increase the scholarship on women of color in computing and apply research findings across settings in order to increase the participation of women of color in computing. The panelists will each discuss programs, initiatives, and/or research findings aiming to address barriers and increase participation and success in computing among underrepresented women of color. The panel will inform participants about the challenges encountered by women and girls of color in pursuing computing, while providing attendees with knowledge about existing initiatives and interventions that are effectively transforming experiences and outcomes for women and girls of color. The panel will also include small-group discussion time, where audience members can discuss how to apply knowledge gained to their particular settings, exchange best practices, discuss challenges in this work, and share recommendations for collectively pushing this applied research agenda forward.
