October 20, 2018 @ 10:00 am - October 21, 2018 @ 3:00 pm
At Hyphen-Hacks, 200 participants from high schools around the bay area will collaborate in teams of four to five to build an innovative product using programming. Participants don’t have to have any programming skills or even a laptop. They will have a full 24 hours to work on their project and will remain at the venue for the entirety of the event. During the opening ceremony, the Hyphen-Hacks team will introduce themselves and the hackathon. They will explain the judging format, judging criteria, hackathon schedule, and hacking theme to the participants. Next, two or three keynote speakers from the tech industry will make short speeches to inspire the participants. Around noon, hacking will commence.
During the hackathon, fifteen or so mentors will walk around the space, helping teams when they need support. Another row of booths will be set up for subject-specific help, so no one is ever stuck with insurmountable problems. A total of three rounds of workshops will be run during the event to educate hackers about specific technical topics and to jumpstart their projects.
At the end of the event, students will present their hacks to be judged by a team of industry professionals. The winners will receive over $5000 worth of prizes, provided by Salesforce, the Google Hardware Store, and Leap Motion.
